Vehicles on the SH1 bridge over the last week will have seen a flurry of activity on the North Bank of the Waitaki River. In a culmination of 4 years of planning and consultation, the Lower Waitaki River Management Society is pleased to announce the opening of the new boat ramp access point into the Lower Waitaki River.
The boat ramp, built within the river protection works on the west side of the SH1 bridge, is by far the best point on the Lower Waitaki to put in a jet boat. In less than a week already 20 boats have been launched here. The ramp is open to the public at no cost, however donations are gratefully accepted by the Society.
The ramp can be accessed from Te Maiharoa Road, and it is recommended that users approach the ramp in a clockwise direction, entering from the east and exiting from the west.
Many thanks to the volunteers that drove this project and to the various groups that helped made this project a reality, including Rooney’s Earthworks, Environment Canterbury, Waimate District Council, Waihao Marae and Transit NZ. The funding for the project was generously donated by Meridian Energy.
